While we were in Scotland we were fortunate to be there for the annual get together at our cousins’ homes. They live way up at the north of Scotland near Wick in the county of Caithness.
During the evening we took part in some Scottish country dancing. I really had to search back through my memory bank to remember the steps to the dances I had learnt at school. I was remembering the various dances we had been taught and was trying to explain one of them to my cousin Joan but I couldn’t remember the name of the dance. Since returning to Australia I have searched my Scottish Country Dance Book
(a gift from my school friend when I emigrated to Australia in 1965) and have found the dance that I was thinking of, The Waltz Country Dance.

The instructions make it sound rather complicated but it really is a very simple dance.
If you have looked closely at the instructions you would have found some terms that perhaps require explanation. eg. pousette
Fortunately at the front of the book there is an explanation of terms used within the book. A pousette by the way is . . .
One of the scenes in Four Weddings and a Funeral involves Scottish Country Dancing and they all look like they are having a great time. Pity about the subsequent scene! Have you seen the movie?

Your dance book is very cool. I always enjoyed folk dancing when we did it in school.
I didn’t mention on my blog – but I lived in Aberdeen for about 4years and in fact got married in the Udny Arms, Newburgh, north of Aberdeen (home of the sticky toffee pudding no less)! I adored living in Scotland and my eldest son was born there. I worked in a Government job and took a lot of stick for being English – but that was ok, I gave back as good as I got and eventually I even began to understand what they were saying (lol)! One of my favourites was “furry boots” or in English: “where abouts”!
I laughed at your “furry boots”.
