Federation Square and the Hollywood costume exhibition

Federation SquareFederation Square was the subject of a great deal of controversy when it was built but it now has become an integral part of the Melbourne landscape.  One of the reasons for the controversy was the unusual architecture.

live entertainment, big screen too While we were in Federation Square there was live entertainment plus the big screen.  We were on our way to the National Gallery of Victoria to see the Monet Exhibition.  The exhibition was excellent.

We had been to the Hollywood Costume Exhibition ,which had come from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and was now showing in the ACMI building in Federation Square.

The Hollywood Costume Exhibition was amazing and well worth the entry cost.  There were costumes from all eras of the film industry and along with the actual costumes, there were interviews with costume designers and film directors that added extra interest to the exhibition.

It is fitting that I had taken a picture of an old movie theatre viewed from Federation Square after we exited the exhibition.

DSCN0208We finished off our day with a trip to the movie theatre ourselves, to see The Great Gatsby.

I have enjoyed Baz Luhrmann’s movies with my favourites being Romeo and Juliet, Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge.  The Great Gatsby was disappointing in my view.  I felt exhausted at the end as it is so “full on”.  There is too much to look at and it is at a frenetic pace. Despite saying that I still enjoyed my evening at the theatre and I thought Joel Edgerton was excellent as Tom Buchanan.

  1. I haven’t looked through blogs for a while and this was such a treat! We stayed in Melbourne for a month around Christmas 2011. Your photos and story brought back some lovely memories.

    • We lived most of our married life in Canberra and moved to Metung on the Gippsland Lakes when we retired. We have a daughter who lives in Melbourne so we visit fairly regularly. It is about a three and a half hour drive to Melbourne.
I love Melbourne as it has so much to offer. I will be back there again next week to watch the Melbourne Rebels playing the British and Irish Lions. I am really looking forward to it.
