Christmas decorations, do you prefer homemade or store-bought?

While in Melbourne we did our fair share of window shopping and obviously there was a heavy emphasis on all things Christmas.  The thing that surprised me the most was the cost of Christmas decorations.

How simple is this decoration and yet the asking price is $5!  I would quite happily pay it if the money was going to the person who made  the decoration but that isn’t the case.

The same price applies to this decoration. I think I will be trying my hand at some simple decorations this Christmas.

One of the many joys of Christmas time is reminiscing about the origins of various decorations on the Christmas tree.  We still have decorations made by our children when they were in pre-school, our children are now in their thirties. When they were older than pre-school the decorations could involve a bit of sewing and one of the decorations my elder daughter made was a heart decoration out of red checked material and she filled it with rice.  So much nicer when it is homemade.

Our tree has a mix of store-bought and homemade decorations.  What type of tree decorations do you prefer?

  1. I found this is a most interesting post. I like a mixture of shop bought and homemade and I reckon you could make some beautiful decorations with your scraps of fabric. My sister has made some this year, out of Christmassy fabric and using beads and they’ve been selling well at craft fairs. She charges more or less what they cost to make, without the big mark up you get in shops. I think my favourite decorations are the ones I remember from my childhood, my parents have kept quite a few, and it’s nice to see them each year at Christmas.
