I’ve never had a dishwasher until now. . .

When I tell people that I have never had a dishwasher they tend to look at me with an amazed expression on their face.  Well we have finally gone to the other side. 🙂  We bought a dishwasher.  It is a momentous event in our household.

ready and waitingThe space has been cleared, ready and waiting.

the dishwasherThe dishwasher has arrived.

placed dishwasherThe dishwasher has been installed and now we just need to replace the altered cabinet front.

People tell us that we wont know ourselves now that we have a dishwasher. Our next step is to get our heads around the minefield that is dishwashing detergents. Can you recommend a particular type?

I love the kind that comes in little pods. I buy whatever brand I can but I really love Sunlight. The pods are easy to pop in with no messy drip off the detergent lid. You will love this dishwasher. The only thing is with 2 people you tend not to wash the dishes very often! We do it when we have no more clean silverware!

Thanks Jennifer. Yes, it took us a couple of days to get sufficient items to warrant putting on a load. I’m not sure if we can get Sunlight pods here but thanks for your comment.

I would go with the pods as well- Aldi have some which are quite cost effective. I tend to put the dishwasher on every couple of days, for a family of 4, but also when we have run out of knives and forks too!

Looks like every couple of days will be the way to go. We have an Aldi near here so I will check out the pods. Thanks for your input.

Wow good on you. My friend said to me when we got ours. “If it doesn’t fit in the dishwasher chuck it out!” We Like the Aldi tablets, reccommended to us by a guy who came to fix ours once, have used them mostly since, nice and cheap to and they work well. All the bells and whistles of the others are superfluous. It’s all marketing ….what next? We find enough stuff for every 2 days for the two of us. We bought one with a manual knob because our Asko only lasted 5 min with a blown circuit board. Now you have time for more Knitting!

Not sure about having more time for knitting, I still haven’t finished the jumper I was knitting for Maggie – it is at the sew up stage, not my favourite stage.
Every couple of days seems to be the consensus when there are only two of you and Aldi seems to be the front runner at the moment. Thanks for letting me know what you use.

  4. Congratulations! I’ve found myself in the same position as you when admitting to not having a dishwasher. Some people just can’t believe it and wonder how on earth I manage, but I enjoy washing dishes, I find it therapeutic. I did live in a house with a dishwasher for a while but I still washed the dishes manually. I hope you get used to yours soon and find it to have been a good purchase.

It is taking a bit of getting used to and I still find I am enjoying the hand washing. No doubt after a few months I will wonder how on earth I survived without one!
Our main reason for buying the dishwasher was for the future when we sell the house. We are contemplating putting down new flooring and thought it would be best to put the dishwasher in before we do the flooring.

Wow! We lived in 2 houses that did not have a dishwasher before the house we live in now. So from age 20-29 we washed by hand. I told my realator at the time that the house HAD to have a dishwasher when we were looking for a new home. She thought that was a strange request. I have switched to the pods, I use Finish brand, but also use Jet Dry and then the cleaner about once a year to remove any buildup. Congrats!

Thank you for your comment. The main reason for buying the dishwasher was for the future selling of the house. I could imagine there would be people like yourself who would reject the house because it didn’t have a dishwasher so I felt it was best that we put one in before we decide on new flooring.
Thanks for the heads up on the detergents you use.

I like the sound of a dishwasher. The grandchildren won’t have to wash up any more!

Perhaps they won’t have to wash up quite as often. Maybe they will be able to put away instead. Love your style Emma. Xxx
