Some revitalisation in Metung

Metung is presently having a bit of work done.  The marina looks as though it is getting underway and Patterson Park is about to have a facelift but the most obvious sign is this sign!

MetungThe old sign is still on view further down the road but the new one certainly gives a better introduction to the village.

old signageNote that we are a plastic bag free village, and have been so for many years.

  1. I like both signs, will they keep the old one as well do you think? I think it’s terrific that you’re plastic bag free, do you get paper bags in the shops, or does everyone take their own with them? I have a nice jute bag my sister brought me back from Mull that declares Mull and Iona plastic bag free islands. The Scottish government are planning to bring in a charge for all plastic bags later this year, and some shops have already started charging for them. I think it’s a good idea because it makes people think twice about taking a bag, and hopefully encourages them in the longer term to carry their own with them.

    • I think both signs will probably stay as the older sign is on the road just after the junction of a road from the opposite direction.(not sure if that makes sense)

The shops in Metung use paper bags or you can provide your own.
Many of the shops in Australia have become plastic bag free but the big supermarkets, after a period of charging for bags, still have plastic bags, but supposedly biodegradable. I think a fair percentage of the population here now use their own bags rather than the plastic bags provided by the shops. I don’t think we will become plastic bag free, it is too convenient for those people in a hurry and now that the bags can be biodegradable they don’t seem to pose such a threat.
I will continue to use my own bags rather than the plastic ones.

  2. Hi, have just found your blog and read your post about Metung… I am sorry but I haven’t come across this place before, so have googled to find exactly where it is! I have relations in Melbourne who take us out and about when we visit (from the UK) so will ask next time if we can visit this area… looks lovely! I think both signs are necessary, the new one is very stylish, modern and quirky, however the other one states exactly “who” Metung is and what going on and what you can find….. I absolutely L-O-V-E the no plastic bag commitment, WELL DONE Metung!!
    Bye, Jay

    • Thanks for your comment Jay. I have just had a very quick look at your blog and love what I saw. We were in Yorkshire in 2012, on holiday, and had a wonderful time.
I do hope you get to Metung when you next come to Australia. It is a beautiful place and well worth a visit. We used to live in Canberra and that is well worth the visit too.
      Heather
