What is this thing?

on

I have been working on a project recently that my younger daughter asked me to make. It is not something I would normally make. You probably won’t recognise what it is as it is not completed yet. I still have to add the tail fins.

These are all the parts of the object I was making.  I had to leave long tails as the parts had to be sewn up and stuffed.

This is the body base to which all the other parts are added.

The belly and the eyes have been added.

The boobs/udders have been added!

The last step is adding the tail fins.  There are six fins in total.  I couldn’t find beads the same as those shown in this picture but I think those I have will be fine.

This is what I am making. . . . a Skywhale Mamma, a soft toy version.  Originally a hot air balloon which was launched in Canberra.  There is now also a Skywhale Pappa.

The balloons seem to have a bit of a cult following in Canberra.

Canberra’s BentSpoke Brewing Co. has launched the same great Barley Griffin beer with a new pack look. For a limited time only, you can purchase BentSpoke’s favourite Pale Ale with Mama and Papa Skywhale packaging designed by Patricia Piccinini, the hot air balloon artist herself.

My younger daughter sent me the pattern link but I am unable to find the source.  The pattern was made in conjunction with the artist.

I have now finished it.

I’m not a fan of the skywhale as a Canberran. It looks like a giant floating carbuncle. Your soft toy though looks cute.

Thanks Gary. I have to admit I didn’t find the skywhale balloon pretty!
