It’s not just a pile of stones.

The pile of stones to which I am referring is the Great Cairn of Barnenez in Brittany and it is the largest megalithic mausoleum in Europe as well as one of the world’s oldest, older than the Egyptian pyramids.

It really just looks like a large stone mound that has been carefully shaped.  Apparently it was at one time covered in turf.  Inside the mound is what is so significant.

Inside, there are 11 passage tombs but the public is not allowed access to these although parts of the chambers have been exposed and can be seen from the outside.

In the visitors’ centre you can view some of the finds that were discovered when the cairn was restored in the late 50s and 60s.

When walking around the site there is a wonderful sense of peace.

Well worth a visit if you are in Brittany.

My extended family used to joke about my husband’s obsession with ancient tombs, or his stones, but they are really cool!
